St Andrew’s Hospice – Make a Will Month

St Andrew’s Hospice – Make a Will Month Campaign

Inside and Out – a unique perspective from its originator, Louise Arthur

St Andrew’s Hospice provides amazing care and support for patients and their families from across Lanarkshire. I had the privilege to work there for 6 years within the Fundraising Team and have experienced first hand the wonderful, caring and uplifting atmosphere that hits you when you enter the building. Hearing some of the patient’s experiences and stories during my time at the Hospice really made me strive to raise as much money as possible for such a worthwhile cause.

I qualified as a solicitor in 2006 and after completing my traineeship with Gebbie & Wilson, I moved to England and completed the required course to be able to practice law there. I worked in a medium sized firm for a few years before returning home to Strathaven. At that time, the Hospice were looking for someone with a legal connection to build on support from the local legal community and develop a strategy to encourage people to consider leaving a gift to the Hospice in their Wills. I jumped at the chance to work for such a well known and well respected local charity.

After meeting with almost every law firm in Lanarkshire, I started the Make a Will Campaign in 2013 and at that time it ran for 2 weeks. I was so encouraged by the enthusiasm from the solicitors to get involved and support the Hospice that it was clear that it would become an annual campaign and would extend to run for a whole month every March.

Make a Will Month is the ideal opportunity to have a simple Will prepared in exchange for a donation to the Hospice – the solicitors don’t get a single penny! You may also consider leaving a legacy to the Hospice, or other charities, in your Will to be paid from your estate when you die.
